Valley of the Dolls
I know this is supposed to be a kitchsy classic, but I was bored to tears, so I put Underworld: Evolution back in.

It's All Gone Pete Tong
This movie was classified as a comedy, and though it has its funny moments, its filled with sad and bittersweet moments as well. Frankie Wilde is not always a likeable character, but much like a train wreck, its hard to look away.
The Mockumentary starts with Frankie as an absolute mess. A self indulgent, mindless partier and dj, living the meaning of excess in the Spanish isle of Ibiza. As the movie progresses, Wilde loses his hearing, as well as his mind, and finds redemption in the unlikeliest of places. I got a kick out of a lot of the club scenes because it reminded me of my old club/rave days, but mostly I thought it was a great testament of what the human spirit is capable of in the face of a disability.

Beat Street
4 a.m. on UPN... that should tell you something.
BUT I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
It is a classic, which is why I stayed up way too late to watch it. It reminds me of the time a certain someone came to visit over New Year's, and we drove from rental place to rental place trying to find this movie. We never did, and rented the Secret of Nimh instead.
Good times, good times.

Prime
Another good romantic movie, but one that was marketed poorly while it was in theaters. The fact that Uma's character is dating her therapist's son really isn't that pivotal to the movie's plot, which really focuses on the relationship between two people with a large age gap between them. Meryl Streep is cute in her performance, but honestly, if she had been completely cut from the film, it could have trucked along without her. And nevermind the ethics question this raises about her character...
Newcomer, Brian Greenberg is adorable as the 23 year old love interest, portraying youth without arrogance, and playing every scene with good spirited naivete. Uma's character, the recently divorced Rafi, finds easy middleground between vulnerability and experience of the worldly 37 years.
I don't want to give away the ending, but if you know anything about my feelings on love stories, you can probably guess how it ends.
As it should.

The New World
I was a bit surprised by this movie. I was expecting something a little more "Dances with Wolves", but you know, that's okay. Even though this movie is a straight up love story (don't be fooled) it was very good (though not historically accurate in the least). The young actress who was cast as Poco-, I mean Rebecca, is excellent and should have at least gotten a nomination from somebody, but I have a feeling she'll sink back into the obscurity from which she came (but I hope not). Overall, its beautifully shot, a bit slow, and definitely not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.
