Monster House

Lately the studios have been battling it out over the lucrative business of animated films.

Much to my delight.

I love animation. Even bad animation. I have watched everything from Saturday morning cartoons to the finest in Japanese hentai.

But I must say, Monster House is some of the finest.

This movie uses the same type of motion capture as the creepy holiday film, Polar Express, but uses it to its advantage rather than tooting it's own horn about the technology. The facial expressions are wonderful, capturing every nuance of the three precocious kids, the textures are well defined and the movement is fluid. Yes, technically, this movie is well done, but it's the great story that pushes it over the edge. It's hilarious. Chowder is my new hero. Or maybe Skull. Or Bones. Or Zee. Yup, the characters are all great and the voice acting (by the likes of Jason Lee and Napoleon Dynamite himself)is the icing on the cake. Just all around a fine movie.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

And I wanted to pull out my own eyes after watching this movie. It's fucking horrible. Just horrible. And not in a good way.

Thank You For Smoking

Here is a movie that is appalling and hilarious at the same time. The only reason this movie works is because Aaron Eckhart plays the fast talking lobbyist with just enough subtlety that he doesn't turn into a cartoon character. Though some of the moments felt like a pompous inside joke (see the scene about... ironically enough, about the inside joke), most of the scenes are brilliant. I especially like the meetings of the "Merchants of Death" or "Mod Squad", and watch in horror on the body count just piles up. A fine piece of black humor.

Memoirs of a Geisha

I don't know what I was thinking taking so long in seeing this movie. It is unbelievable. Maybe I thought the idea of Ziyi Zhang in an English speaking movie was a little disturbing. Didn't matter... she was just as mesmerising as in anything else she's been in. The cinematography was stunning, the art direction deep and lush, and the story I found to be quite gripping. I almost didn't want to send this movie back to Netflix. :(

The Notorious Bettie Page

I am a fan of Bettie Page. I have been for a very long time. Before her image was put on throw pillows at Hot Topic. I knew from the very moment I heard this movie was being made... I'd either love it or hate it.

But thankfully, they pulled it off.

I read the book on which the movie is based, and it follows it well, giving it an authentic '50's feel. Gretchen Mol portrays the eerily resilient pin-up through her life of turmoil and triumph, and executes Bettie's poses with such accuracy its almost spooky. I read a review that said they had wished the movie followed Bettie into her later years, but I disagree. They are certainly not pretty, and would should embrace the icon that was left behind.

New and Improved

As you can tell, this fine blog now contains pictures and graphics for your continued viewing pleasure. You're welcome.

The Future of Food

I stumbled across this movie one night on Netflix. I'm a big fan of documentaries, and it sounded interesting, so I thought I would give it a go. The editing is a little choppy, but the information therein is very disturbing and not anything you would expect. I've always known I wasn't a fan of genetically modified food, but this shows you just how large of a problem it really is. The financial, ecological, agricultural, nutritional costs are all massive. I highly recommend this movie. It'll make you think about everything you've ever eaten in your life... it's absolutely jaw dropping.

Something New

Here we have a movie that closely inspects romantic relationships between white people and black people. It's not trite, it's not ridiculous, it's not unrealistic or cliche. It is very well done. It explores the fact that even though someone might not be prejudice, they still might have questions or curiosity about someone from another race. Of course, it's a touchy subject. But not talking about race just leads to more questions and more curiosity. This movie also touches on equally touchy subjects such as dealing with family, class and the battle of the sexes. But all is done with class and sensitivity. I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.

Jimmy and Judy

Jimmy and Judy Official Website

Jimmy and Judy on IMDB

Cast & Crew:
Edward Furlong, William Sadler, Rachel Bella, Chaney Kley, directed by Randall Rubin, Jon Schroder

Synopsis:
The ultimate teenage outcast road movie, Jimmy and Judy charts the path of a pair of outsiders who fall in love and out of control as they travel across an American landscape dotted with hypocrisy, materialism, drugs and violence. Written and directed by Randall K. Rubin and Jon Schroder, Jimmy and Judy offers a fresh take on classic adolescent themes such as rebellion, love, and anger.

I went to the premiere last night, and I must say this movie is truly excellent. And I'm not just saying that because I'm biased. Jimmy and Judy falls into the gritty, ugly, tragic indie genre that I love (see: Niagara, Niagara, Twin Falls Idaho) following a young couple that you know are doomed from movie poster. The movie is very real... sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, but ultimately very sad. Some of the most intense scenes use the effective tactic of showing very little, while during other scenes you feel a bit assaulted by the imagery. A very intense and slightly chubby Edward Furlong plays the title character of Jimmy well, alternating between a hurt, lost young man and troubled delinquent let down by his parents and society. It's almost painful to watch as he manipulates the naive Judy (Rachel Bella)and turns her into the same kind of broken human being. William Sadler is excellent as the legendary Uncle Rodney and practically steals the movie with his meth infused soliloquy mid-film. This movie shows the kind of love that will change your life forever, if you could only survive it. Well done.

Go see this movie! Tell your friends to see this movie! If you city was not selected call your local theater!

Lucky Number Slevin

Dude, where did they get that fucking wallpaper?

Anyhoo...

I thought this gritty film noir was either trying to pay homage (or possible poke fun) at movies like The Usual Suspects, taking every moment of celluloid as an opportunity to add another twist to the plot. However, it stays grounded with quirky characters and witty, though sometimes exhausting, dialog. Lucy Liu, who ranges from "kicks ass" to "sucks ass" in my book, offers up a very likeable counterpart to Josh Harnett's Slevin, a seemingly nice joe with horrible luck. A bevy of other A-listers pop up throughout the film, and all do an excellent job of not taking themselves, nor the movie, too seriously. Add into that fresh cinematography and art direction and you have yourself an enjoyable little thriller.

Instant Justice

Starring Tawny Kitaen.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Running Scared

Who woulda thunk that I could love a Paul Walker movie so much. This is up there with the best of stylized violence: Tarantino, Korean thrillers, Boondock Saints... fucking love it!

Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic

Jesus is magic is magic. Make sure you recommend it to your mother.

Silent Hill

The first half... scary as hell. The second half not so much, but still good. Great details like ambient noise and textures match the game exactly. That one scene... you know the one... made my boobies hurt.

Super Size Me

I'm never eating at McDonald's again. And I think I want to marry Morgan Spurlock. And his plucky vegan wife. Rent this movie.

Dave Chappelle's Block Party

Dave Chappelle is adorable and the music was excellent. But it wasn't just a movie I could sit and watch, so I started drawing halfway through. But it was really nice to have on in the background. I want to live in the Broken Angel house... except I'm afraid of heights. And bugs. And rats.

Rumor Has It

First off, before you laugh, I want to say that if you don't know why I rented this movie, you don't read my blog enough.

Secondly, this is movie is so uncomfortably bad, I almost had to turn it off.

V for Vendetta

As many of you can tell, I am a big fan of the comic/graphic novel based movie genre. I've seen a lot of them. Some have been good (Sin City) and some have been bad (Hulk), but I have to say that this one is among the best. From the cinematography that's dark, but not too dark, to the graceful fight scenes, to the overly poetic, political script, this movies hits all the right notes, being careful to not overstep the boundaries into cheesiness.

Ultraviolet

I so wanted to like this movie, despite that it looked like a Resident Evil/Aeon Flux rip-off. And sure enough, that is exactly what it is. Some of the action scenes start off sorta cool, but quickly get boring and most go on too long. The dialog is horrible and the plot has so many holes I eventually had to just turn it off. Even the hotness that is Milla couldn't save this movie.

Yay!

After too much delay, the DVD player has been replaced. Thank God.

Notice

Because my DVD player has gone kaput, my Netflix account has been put on hold and this blog will not be receiving many updates. However, getting it replaced is a top priority, so hopefully, I'll be back up and running soon.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

A fun summer movie... I think it was better than the first. The FX were executed with a masterful touch, and Disney didn't sugarcoat the movie to make appealing to small children. Aside from the two bimbos sitting next to us that were determined to get up every five minutes, I really enjoyed it.

The Ringer

mmm... Katherine Heigl

Wow... I could feel the loss of karma points while watching this movie, but Goddamn if it wasn't funny. I do love me some no-pc humor.

Valley of the Dolls

I know this is supposed to be a kitchsy classic, but I was bored to tears, so I put Underworld: Evolution back in.

Tristan & Isolde

It is exactly what you would expect it to be.

It's All Gone Pete Tong

This movie was classified as a comedy, and though it has its funny moments, its filled with sad and bittersweet moments as well. Frankie Wilde is not always a likeable character, but much like a train wreck, its hard to look away.

The Mockumentary starts with Frankie as an absolute mess. A self indulgent, mindless partier and dj, living the meaning of excess in the Spanish isle of Ibiza. As the movie progresses, Wilde loses his hearing, as well as his mind, and finds redemption in the unlikeliest of places. I got a kick out of a lot of the club scenes because it reminded me of my old club/rave days, but mostly I thought it was a great testament of what the human spirit is capable of in the face of a disability.

Underworld: Evolution

Waaaaaaay cheesier than the first one, with gratuitous sex and gore.

I LOVED IT!

Beat Street

4 a.m. on UPN... that should tell you something.

BUT I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

It is a classic, which is why I stayed up way too late to watch it. It reminds me of the time a certain someone came to visit over New Year's, and we drove from rental place to rental place trying to find this movie. We never did, and rented the Secret of Nimh instead.

Good times, good times.

Prime

Another good romantic movie, but one that was marketed poorly while it was in theaters. The fact that Uma's character is dating her therapist's son really isn't that pivotal to the movie's plot, which really focuses on the relationship between two people with a large age gap between them. Meryl Streep is cute in her performance, but honestly, if she had been completely cut from the film, it could have trucked along without her. And nevermind the ethics question this raises about her character...

Newcomer, Brian Greenberg is adorable as the 23 year old love interest, portraying youth without arrogance, and playing every scene with good spirited naivete. Uma's character, the recently divorced Rafi, finds easy middleground between vulnerability and experience of the worldly 37 years.

I don't want to give away the ending, but if you know anything about my feelings on love stories, you can probably guess how it ends.

As it should.

Apartment 12

Wow! What a fun little independent comedy! And yes, I originally rented it because Mark Ruffalo stars, but I'm really glad I did. Alex's 'breakdown' was hilarious and the movie is very easy to relate to.

The New World

I was a bit surprised by this movie. I was expecting something a little more "Dances with Wolves", but you know, that's okay. Even though this movie is a straight up love story (don't be fooled) it was very good (though not historically accurate in the least). The young actress who was cast as Poco-, I mean Rebecca, is excellent and should have at least gotten a nomination from somebody, but I have a feeling she'll sink back into the obscurity from which she came (but I hope not). Overall, its beautifully shot, a bit slow, and definitely not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism

See this movie.

No, seriously.

Go now.

X3: The Last Stand

I liked it. Poo on you if you didn't. Nobody is asking you anyhow...

Freaked

A friend recommended this movie... had it not been for him, I probably never would have watched it. And though I didn't find it quite as funny as he does, it is relatively funny, very, very '80's and is probably worth seeing just to see Mr. T in drag. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I still did acid...

Fun With Dick and Jane

Another movie I enjoyed more than I thought I would.

But that might be partially because of the company.

Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit

I hate to admit it, but this was my first Wallace and Gromit experience.

Needless to say, I'm now hooked as a fan for life.

The Chronic (WHAT?!) -les of Narnia

I liked it. More than I thought I would actually.

I loved the Narnia books when I read them at, oh, I don't know... I think I was 11 maybe? And when the movie hit theaters, I was surprised to hear all the hubbub about the Christian undertones. But now that I've seen it, I see what I didn't in my pre pubescent years. Yes, C.S. Lewis was a Christian. And yes, that does translate into the books and the movie. But if he hadn't written other religious material, would people read as much into it? My guess is probably not. After all, if you look closer, you also find touches of Norse and Greek mythology as well.

Fuck it. I LOVED this movie. I loved the books. Daughter of Eve... or not.

Junebug

I think my dad needs to see this movie.

Brokeback Mountain

I put off seeing this movie for as long as possible to let the hype over the "Gay Oscars" cool off. Any movie that gets as much press as this movie did, makes my stomach turn just a little bit... regardless of the subject matter.

But I'll admit it. I did like this movie. And yes, I would love a Jake-Heath sandwich. Thank you for asking. But seriously, it is a beautiful movie, I cried like a bitch at the end, and Ang Lee's direction is awe inspiring.

Ellie Parker

Ellie's life is nothing if not complex, a virtual roller coaster of moments. You feel that the struggling actress could possibly be on the verge, and the anticipation is a bit uncomfortable to watch. But I think, that's kind of the point. That desperation is something every artist feels even if they are less drama queen in nature. In the end, Ellie is lovable despite of all her flaws, or maybe even possibly because of them.

Aeon Flux

I really wanted this movie to be good. I like Charlize, I was a fan of the Liquid Television animated version, and the visual effects in the promos looked promising.

But this movie is not good. Its not Catwoman bad, it is not necessarily bad at all, just very dull. Even Charlize in a million s/m outfits doing martial arts moves that accentuate her lengthy gams couldn't spice up the exhausting plot and trivial dialog. And to think she almost killed herself making this movie...

Final Fantasy: Advent Children (US Review)

I copied my review over from the Gamer Girl group I run on Suicide Girls because I'm lazy and didn't feel like typing it all over again:

So, I finally picked up my copy of FF: Advent Children yesterday after months of watching a bootleg copy of the Japanese version without subtitles. If you're thinking about picking it up a few notes:

- The dubbing is really pretty good, I was pleased.

- You can still watch it in Japanese with English subtitles if you're a purist

- If you've seen the Japanese version, the US version DOES have some differences, including the ending sequence

- Is it wrong that I think Cloud is a total hottie?

- I got the 2-disc special edition... and its really not that special. The added features are just ok and they didn't even include a cool book.

- Still worth adding to your collection

Just Friends

I actually liked this movie way more than I thought I would. Of course, I wasn't exactly sober, but it was exactly what the doctor ordered for my current state of mind. Mindless, stupid comedy with a pinch of sweetness. I really like Ryan Reynolds and the fact that as attractive as he is, he chooses to be a clown as opposed to the cheesy leading man.

A Love Song For Bobby Long

A friend of mine recommended this movie, said it changed his life.

It might not have changed my life, but this movie is very, very good.

I've always been a little bit on the fence about John Travolta. As an actor, you have kitschy classics like Grease and Pulp Fiction, but then you also have Battlefield Earth. And I generally have a problem with anyone who's a Scientologist (sorry Beck). Call me prejudice, I call it a cult. But then again, he seems like such a generally nice guy.

Well, like him or hate him, this movie proves that Travolta can actually act. The melodramatic Bobby Long is a true bastard, but that's what gives life to his story. The supporting cast is equally as good, and like New York City in a Woody Allen film, New Orleans comes alive to become one of the movie's critical characters.

I would put this movie on anyone's must see list.

Just Like Heaven

Pure crap. The storyline is ridiculous, the dialog isn't well written and the characters are relatively flat. And the ending! Cheese, cheese, cheese. However, everyone in it is completely likeable, and I stand by my statement that Mark Ruffalo is the most stalkworthy man in Hollywood. I usually don't go all gooey over a Hollyweird heartthrob, but Mr. Ruffalo gets me more than a little moist. He's really the only reason I rented this shite, and I hope to God I never see him in a piece of mainstream crap like this ever again.

Wonder Woman (Finally, some good news...)

After years of some scary speculation over the casting of the Wonder Woman movie, including such names as Sandra Bullock and Sarah Michelle Gellar (we loved you as Buffy, but as an Amazon princess?)

Then I heard that Joss Whedon was heading up the project, and lately Mr. Whedon can do no wrong in my book.

And with this latest news, he proves me right:

Beckinsale confirmed as "Wonder Woman"
Friday, March 31,11:57 PM ET

Writer/director Joss Whedon confirmed today that production on his highly anticipated movie adaptation of the popular comic book series "Wonder Woman" would begin filming in early September with British actress Kate Beckinsale chosen as the lead. Whedon, who has secretly been auditioning dozens of top names in the industry over the past month, said that he was "very happy" with his pick and couldn't wait to get started.

Whedon also announced that he had recently finished his screenplay of the film and that fans of the series would not be disappointed, with plenty of fun, action and thrills for everyone: "I hope folks realize how important this movie is to me, and how much I care about female characters. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people with this one."

Happy happy happy me.

I want to have Joss Whedon's baby this movie is so good.

Ok. Certainly no Nightmare..., but not horrible. I think Burton is beginning to slip though. I blame HBC.

It's the Yoko factor, I'm telling you.

The Brothers Grimm

The jury is still out on this one.

No, seriously.

Since the red Netflix envelope dropped into my mailbox, I've watched this movie multiple times and I honestly do not know what my opinion is on it.

But here's what I do know...

I am a big fan of Terry Gilliam's other work.
Though Heath Ledger's performance is a bit lackluster at times, I found him very watchable.
I found myself really disliking Matt Damn's character, but that might have been the point.
Something tells me they really wanted Keira Knightley for the female lead.
Though I could appreciate the "look" they were trying for, the fx come off cartoony at times.

I might have to watch it a few more times before I decide. I'll let you know.

Sunday, March 19, 2006

MirrorMask

Think the Henson movies of yesteryear... Labyrinth, Dark Crystal... think The Cell for kids... think a Brothers Quay bedtime story... all I can say is fucking wow.

Madagascar

I love animation, and this is one of the best. Definitely one to own. At first, I was turned off by the big Hollywood cast and the so-so animation, but after viewing the movie, I find I was wrong on both counts. Chris Rock surprisingly pulls off 'sweet', Ben Stiller is actually funny, the rest of the cast adds their own spice, and the animation style that initially turned me off, is actually quite creative and fresh and you'll want to see it again to pick up all the details both on screen and in the script.

Disney better watch their collective asses, because Dreamworks is the new "it" company for American animation.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Rent

I cried at the end, just like I cried all 4 times I've seen the play.

If you like the theatrical version, if you like the music and the storyline, you'll like the movie. If you don't, you won't. Simple as that.

Playing God

A mildly entertaining movie. Caught it at 4am-ish on Fox. Can't get over how young Angelina Jolie looks. Not that she's old and haggered now or anything. God, I miss the X-files...

The Academy Awards. (Delayed Reaction.)

I realize this post is a little late, but my 'puter was a little under the weather when the Oscars aired.

So instead of my long drawn out Oscar Review, you only get the Cliff Notes version. Yeah. I know how sad you are.

- Best show in years. Decent pace, great writing, only a few uncomfortable moments.
- Jon Stewart, excellent host. Funny, relevant, edgy. How about Bill Maher co-hosting with him next year.
- When the Academy President gives his annual speech mid-show, I usually go get a snack. To liven it up this year, he gave a most entertaining "anti-piracy" speech. I laughed so hard I almost pee'd.
- Jake Gyllenhaal rolling his eyes at above speech... priceless.
- "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" winning Best Song. Fawking awesome.
- Most uncomfortable moment of the evening... Lauren Bacall unable to read the teleprompter. I had to leave the room.
- What the hell was Charlize wearing?

- And finally, my thoughts on the winners...

* George Cloonely deserved Supporting Actor, but was guanteed the award since he wasn't getting the director award.
* Ang Lee got director because Brokeback wasn't getting Best Picture.
* Crash won Best Picture because it deserved it.
* Felicity Huffman was robbed.
* Best Supporting Actress was a total farce. Thandie Newton should have been nominated AND gotten the Oscar.

... and that's about it. Or at least what I can remember. It's not like I was taking notes (this year). Ha, ha. Just kidding.

...or am I?

Jarhead

Jarhead gets my award for the most underappreciated movie of 2005. A truly excellent movie. But beware, it's not a movie about a war. It's a movie about a soldier. None the less, I think it should be placed on the shelf with other military movies such as Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now. Saarsgard should have replaced William Hurt on the Oscar ballot for supporting actor. The strange thing is, I don't remember this movie doing particularly well at the theaters, but I guess that really isn't saying much since NO movies are doing that stellar at the box office. Oh well, rent this movie. Or come watch it at my place since I'll be owning this one.

In Her Shoes

Why?
Why?
Why?
Why?
Why do I keep doing this to myself? I need to stop listening to people who tell me to watch a movie that my gut tells me to avoid. It's not that this is a bad movie. Because it really isn't.
But it's a fucking chick flick!
I can do happy. I can do sad. I can do dysfunctional families, star crossed lovers, relationships destroyed by disease. I am not completely without feeling, even as hard as I try to be. But this movie was just pure sap. That Beaches, Terms of Endearment kind of sweet that makes your fillings hurt. Even if slipping into a diabetic coma is your things, I couldn't get past the whole Cameron Diaz thing. Man, is she annoying. The always adorable Toni Collette was the only thing that kept me from turning the movie, but the script constantly fails her character giving her all the depth of a saucer of milk. Oh well. Win some, lose some.

40-Year Old Virgin

Really good. More sweet and less ha-ha than I thought it would be,but really good. Steve Carell gets mad props for the chest waxing scene, which was shown in the tv promos, but is so much worse in the movie. You can actually see blood beading up after the strips of linen are pulled.

The cameos by Carell's Office co-stars were perfect and Catherine Keener is too cute as always. This is one I want for my collection for sure.

Just Visiting

Ever since seeing the Professional, I have been crushin on French actor Jean Reno. I'll watch anything that he's in. Unfortunately, his American movie career has been a little hit and miss since making the Professional, and has fallen into Forrest Whitaker "movie-whore" territory (someone's agent needs to be shot).

So when I caught this movie 5 minutes in, I was excited that network tv was showing a Reno movie I hadn't already seen.

Instead of actually telling you what I thought of this movie, I am just going to give you the Netflix synopsis and let you decide for yourself.

It's a case of culture clash when a warrior finds himself a few thousand miles -- and 800 years -- from home! Count Thibault of Malfete (Jean Reno) is transported from 12th century France to a modern Chicago museum. There, he meets the beautiful Julia (Christina Applegate), a descendant of his. Problem is, if he doesn't get back to his own time, she'll never be born!
Starring: Jean Reno, Christian Clavier, Christina Applegate
Director: Jean-Marie Gaubert

Parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
Genre: Comedy
Format: Widescreen, More
Language: English

Tara Reid co-stars.

Waiting

Not nearly as gross as I thought it would be. Or as bad. If you have ever worked in any food service position, you see how on the money this movie is.

Good for a chuckle when paired with fresh greens and a bag of salty snacky goodness.

Last Days

I am a big fan of Gus Van Sant and I do love me some depressing indie movies.

Therefore, I thought this movie would be right up my alley.

It wasn't. It was fucking horrible. Never in my life have I seen a movie with such a feeling of self-importance. The scenes of the Kurt Cobain-like character performing mundane actions while looking filthy and mumbling to himself go on entirely too long and make up the majority of the movie. And it's not like we don't all know how it ends...

Men With Brooms

It's funny that I should catch this movie, since recently I declared curling the best sport ever.

It was very cheesy, very Canadian, and had that chick from alien show Invasion who has the personality of a potato. Other than that, it was pretty good.

Excuses, Excuses...

Disclaimer time again kids.

Because of some techincal issues (fucking computer), I've been a little backed up as far as keeping this blog up to date. Get over it. It happens.

Concerns About Harrison Ford

So, I just saw the latest television promo for the new Harrison Ford movie Firewall.

Here's my question: when did Indiana Jones turn into the Michael Bolton of Hollywood? Has he even shown his acting muscle in the past decade, let alone stretched it? Somewhere along the way he started phoning it in, which is a shame. Maybe Ally McBeal has something to do with it...

Sphere

The cheesy sci-fi weekend continues with Sphere on UPN at 3am.

The fact that its on UPN at 3am should say it all.

And the sad thing is, that show Thresold (is it even still on?) is a total rip off of this movie.

The Cave

Sorry I haven't been doing many updates lately... I've been on this Muppet kick lately and I didn't think anyone wanted to hear me rant about Fraggles.

So anyway, tonight I saw the Cave. Let's not beat around the bush here... This movie was complete crap. Might by good as a Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie, but beyond that, this film has no redeeming qualities.

Except maybe the ending credits. (Such wit...)

MOVIE TASTE DISCLAIMER

I thought I should offer up my readers a little disclaimer about my taste in movies. First off, I like what I like. Whether its pure cheese, deep drama, or the finest kung-fu action, I like what I like.

Also, with the amount of movies I watch, I have to take each movie at face value. For example, I rented, watched and enjoyed Elektra, hailed as one of the worst movies of the year. Did people expect it to be an Oscar winner? On the same token, I rented Catwoman, which truly was one of (if not THE) worst movie of the year.

I believe that just because a movie is bad, it doesn't mean you can't squeeze some enjoyment out of it.

The Island

This movie was way better than I thought it would be... however, it really breaks down into two seperate movies. The first half plays out as an interesting and visually stunning sci-fi movie, subtly asking about the morality of cloning. The second half is pure action, with car chases and explosions, but done with a certain amount of finesse not seen in many movies of the same genre. Recently, a certain movie critic asked if Scarlett Johansson has the acting ability to carry the parts she has been getting. Ability or not, she certainly has the screen presence to keep all eyes on her.

If action/sci-fi is your thing, you might want to give this movie a go. Its fun.

Nick Fury and the something, something...

Caught the 2nd half of this movie on Fox. All I have to say is David Hasselhoff in an eye patch. Check out this fine dialog...

"Nick, I thought you were dead!"
"I was. But I got better."

Exorcism of Emily Rose

More courtroom thriller than horror, this movie was everything I wasn't expecting. Asks alot of questions about personal faith and made me want to research the real case which the movie was based on. Very cool.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Pure fun. I loved this movie. It won't win any Oscars, and it won't raise your IQ, but it is so much fun to watch. Pitt and Jolie have great chemistry (I bet the sex is great) and the action sequences are fresh and fun.

Great popcorn movie.
